AI receptionist vs a website chatbot
They catch different people. Most Indian SMB enquiries are still a phone call.
These get compared because both are described as AI that talks to customers, and the comparison is close to meaningless as usually framed. A chatbot reaches somebody who is already on your website, on a device, willing to type. A phone agent reaches somebody who searched, tapped the number, and expects a voice. For most Indian small businesses those are not the same person, and the second group is considerably larger.
At a glance
| AI receptionist | Website chatbot | |
|---|---|---|
| Where the enquiry starts | A phone call to your number | Your website, if they visit it |
| Who it reaches | Anyone who can dial | Visitors willing to type |
| Tapping Call from a Maps listing | Answered | Never sees it |
| After-hours | Both work | |
| Books an appointment | During the call | Yes, if integrated |
| Languages | Eight, spoken, switching mid-call | Whatever it is configured to type |
| Works for a caller with no website visit | Yes | No |
The question is where your enquiries begin
Not which technology is better. If people find you on Google Maps and tap Call, a chatbot never gets a chance - the enquiry has already become a phone call. If people research on your website for a week before contacting you, a chatbot catches them earlier than the phone does. Most Indian clinics, salons, institutes and property desks are firmly in the first group, which is why the phone line is where the losses are.
What a chatbot is genuinely better at
We would rather you bought the right thing.
- Answering repetitive questions for people already browsing your site
- Capturing an enquiry at two in the morning from somebody unwilling to talk
- Handing over documents, links, forms and prices as text the visitor keeps
- Anything where the answer is long and easier to read than to hear
What a phone agent is genuinely better at
The narrower, more common case.
- The caller who tapped Call from a Maps listing and never saw your site
- Older callers, and anyone who simply prefers to speak
- Booking in one interaction rather than a form and a callback
- Callers who switch language mid-sentence, which is normal on an Indian line
- Urgency - a person with a problem now does not type
They are not mutually exclusive
Nothing here argues against running both. They cost differently, they are configured differently, and they catch different enquiries. The mistake worth avoiding is buying a chatbot to solve a ringing phone, or the reverse.
What the phone agent actually does · Missed calls
The short answer
If your enquiries arrive as website visits, a chatbot is the right tool. If they arrive as phone calls that nobody answers, a chatbot will not touch the problem.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need both?
Plenty of businesses run both. They catch different people, so the honest answer depends on where your enquiries actually start.
Does FrontivaAI do chat?
No. It is a voice product for the phone line. We would rather say that than sell you a weaker version of something else.
Which is cheaper?
Chatbots are usually cheaper. They are also unable to answer a phone, so the comparison only matters if your enquiries are arriving by chat.
Can the phone agent send a link?
It sends a WhatsApp confirmation with your details and location. It is not a document-delivery tool.
Call the AI on +91 79 7144 1998, or book a demo.
If this sounds familiar
- We keep missing calls - what is that costing?
- Customers ring after we close
- The line is engaged all morning
- Should I hire a receptionist?
- People book and then do not turn up
