Does an AI receptionist work with call forwarding?
Yes. You keep your number - you forward it, and you choose which calls go.
This is the question that decides most deals, and the answer is the reason people buy. You do not print a new number, you do not update your Google Business Profile, and you do not tell anyone anything. You forward the line you already have, and you decide which calls the AI gets.
At a glance
| Forwarding mode | What the AI picks up | Who it suits |
|---|
| Busy / no answer | Only the calls your desk could not take | A clinic with a receptionist who is often on another call |
| No answer after N rings | Anything your team does not reach in time | Most first deployments - start here |
| Unconditional, out of hours only | Everything after closing and on Sundays | Businesses whose problem is 8 pm and Sunday |
| Unconditional, always | Every call | A business with nobody on the phone at all |
What you actually dial
Conditional forwarding is a network feature on every Indian mobile and landline operator. Your operator's code is what sets it; we give you the exact string for your operator during setup, and we test it with you on a live call before handover.
- On a mobile, it is usually in Settings, under Call forwarding
- On a landline or EPABX, your telecom vendor sets it - we can talk to them
- You can change it yourself at any time, including turning it off
- Nothing about your number, your bill or your operator changes
Start with the calls you are already losing
We recommend forwarding on no-answer first. Your team keeps answering exactly as they do today, and the AI only picks up what would otherwise have rung out. Nobody's habits change, and after two weeks you can see in the dashboard precisely how many calls that was.
What breaks, honestly
Two things. If your operator has conditional forwarding disabled on your plan, you will only be able to use unconditional forwarding, which means the AI answers everything - fine for some, wrong for most. And if you forward from a number that is itself already forwarded somewhere, some operators will not chain it. Both are things we find in the first ten minutes of setup, not three weeks in.
Transfers go back the other way
When a caller asks for a person, the AI dials your front desk number and hands the call over, with the caller still on the line. So forwarding in and transferring out both use numbers you already have.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to port my number?
No. Porting is not involved at any point. You keep your number and your operator.
Will my Google listing or signage need changing?
No. That is the whole point of forwarding.
Can I forward only after hours?
Yes. Many businesses start that way - unconditional forwarding switched on at closing and off in the morning, or a schedule set by your operator.
What happens if I turn forwarding off?
Your phone behaves exactly as it did before. There is nothing to uninstall.
Does it work on a landline or EPABX?
Yes, but your telecom vendor usually has to set it rather than you. We are happy to speak to them directly.
Can the AI transfer a caller back to us?
Yes, to whichever number you nominate, and it does so the moment a caller asks for a person.
