Why menus lose calls
A menu adds work and delay before the caller gets anything. Someone with a simple question - are you open on Sunday, what does a cleaning cost - has to guess which option hides the answer, wait, and often still reach a person who is busy. Callers with an alternative simply use it.
Where an IVR is still the right tool
High-volume support lines with genuinely distinct queues, compliance announcements, and call-centre routing where a human always picks up at the end. If your phone exists to distribute calls between large teams, a menu is not the problem.
You can keep both
Some businesses keep a short IVR for existing customers and send the new-enquiry option to the AI, which is where bookings and revenue actually come from. Forwarding is per-number, so this is a routing decision, not a rebuild.
