Can an AI receptionist speak Telugu?
Yes - Telugu, English, Hindi and Tamil, and it follows you when you switch mid-sentence.
Most voice AI sold in India speaks English and Hindi and calls that multilingual. That is not how a phone call in Hyderabad or Vijayawada actually goes: a caller opens in English, gives their name in Telugu, argues about the time in Telugu, and thanks you in English. FrontivaAI is built for that, and this page is specific about where the edges are.
At a glance
| What it does | Where the edge is |
|---|
| Telugu | Understands and replies in Telugu, including numbers, dates and times spoken as Telugu words | The caller's first full sentence sets the language; single words do not switch it |
| English | Full support | None |
| Hindi | Full support, including Hindi-English mixing inside one sentence | None |
| Tamil | Understands and replies in Tamil | Same as Telugu |
| Kannada | Not supported | Do not buy this for a Bengaluru counter that needs Kannada |
| Marathi | Not supported | Same |
| Switching mid-call | Follows the caller from the next reply onward | It will not switch on a name or a single 'haan' |
How the switching actually works
The language is decided by the caller's last full sentence, not by a menu and not by a setting. There is no 'press 2 for Telugu'.
- The opening line is always English, and names which languages this business speaks
- A whole sentence of four or more words changes the language, from the very next reply
- A name, a number, an 'ok' or a 'haan' is never treated as a language change
- Indian names come back from speech-to-text in Devanagari routinely, which is a spelling, not a request - so a Devanagari name inside an English call keeps the call in English
You choose which languages your line uses
A clinic in Kondapur that only ever hears English and Hindi can switch the other two off, and then the agent will not attempt them at all. It says, once and warmly, that the front desk can help better, and transfers. That is deliberate: a half-understood Telugu conversation is worse for your patient than a clean handover.
What it does not do
It does not speak Kannada or Marathi. We are not going to give you a date for those, because we have been wrong about dates before. It also does not translate - it answers in the caller's language, it does not relay between two people speaking different ones.
Frequently asked questions
Does the caller have to pick a language?
No, and it never asks. It listens and follows.
What if someone speaks a language you do not support?
It says once, warmly, that the front desk can help them better and transfers the call. It does not attempt the language and it does not tell them it cannot understand them.
Can I turn Telugu off?
Yes. Each business picks which of the four its own line uses, on the AI Agent page, and the change reaches live calls within a minute.
Is Telugu an extra charge?
No. Pricing is by the minute and does not change with the language.
Does it understand Telugu numbers and dates?
Yes, and it says them back as Telugu words rather than reading digits in English.
