AI receptionist vs voicemail
Voicemail costs nothing and returns almost nothing, which is a worse deal than it sounds.
Voicemail is the default because it is free and already switched on, and it is compared against an AI receptionist on price alone. That comparison misses the actual question, which is what fraction of missed callers leave a message at all. In India the honest answer is very few. People ring the next number instead, and the enquiry is not delayed - it is gone, and it never appears in any report as lost.
At a glance
| AI receptionist | Voicemail | |
|---|---|---|
| What the caller hears | A conversation, answered on the first ring | A recording asking them to speak after the tone |
| What most Indian callers do | Talk, and often book | Hang up and ring somebody else |
| Appointment booked | During the call | Never - at best a callback request |
| Who does the follow-up work | Nobody - it is already booked | You, from a list of messages |
| Out of hours | Handled fully | Collected, actioned tomorrow |
| Record of the call | Full transcript and summary | An audio message, if they left one |
| Cost | Rs 7,000/month including 1,000 minutes | Free |
The comparison people actually make is the wrong one
Voicemail versus an AI receptionist is usually framed as free versus paid. The useful frame is different: voicemail converts a missed call into a task on your desk, and an AI receptionist converts it into a booking. If your problem is that you cannot see how many calls you are missing, voicemail does not solve that either - the ones that matter most are precisely the ones that hang up without leaving anything.
What actually happens to the message
Even when somebody does leave one, the work has only moved.
- Somebody has to listen to it, usually hours later
- Then ring back, and most callbacks are not answered first time
- Then check the diary and offer a slot, which is a third contact
- By then the caller has frequently booked with whoever answered live
When voicemail is genuinely the right answer
We would rather you kept it than bought something you do not need.
- Your call volume is very low and you return every message the same hour
- Your callers are existing clients who will wait for you specifically
- Nothing on your line is time-sensitive and nobody is comparison-shopping
- You are not trying to book anything - the calls are informational
You can keep both
This is not either-or, and forwarding is per-condition. Many businesses forward on no-answer only, so the desk keeps answering exactly as it does today and the agent picks up what would have gone to voicemail. Voicemail stays behind it as a last resort. Nothing is uninstalled and nothing about your number changes.
How call forwarding works · What it costs
The short answer
If your callers reliably leave messages and you reliably return them, voicemail is free and sufficient. If they hang up and ring somebody else, voicemail is not cheaper - it is just quieter about the loss.
Frequently asked questions
Do Indian callers really not leave voicemails?
Rarely, in our experience of business lines - they hang up and ring the next number. We are not going to quote a percentage we cannot evidence, but check your own voicemail box against your missed-call log and the gap is usually obvious.
Can I use voicemail as a backup?
Yes. Forward on no-answer to FrontivaAI and leave voicemail behind it. Nothing is removed.
Does it cost more than voicemail?
Yes - voicemail is free. The question is what a booked appointment is worth against Rs 7,000 a month.
Does it leave a record like voicemail does?
A better one: a written transcript and summary of every call, including the ones that did not book.

If this sounds familiar
- We keep missing calls - what is that costing?
- Customers ring after we close
- The line is engaged all morning
- Should I hire a receptionist?
- People book and then do not turn up
