AI receptionist vs just forwarding the calls to your mobile
You already have a solution. It is your own phone, and it is the reason you cannot eat lunch.
Almost nobody shopping for an AI receptionist is starting from nothing. The existing arrangement is that the business number forwards to somebody's personal mobile - usually the owner's - and that person answers everything, everywhere, all day. It is free, it works, and it is the real thing this product competes with. It is worth being honest about what it costs, because the cost is not on any invoice.
At a glance
| AI receptionist | Forwarding to your mobile | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost on the invoice | Rs 7,000/month including 1,000 minutes | Nothing |
| Who answers | The agent, every time | You, if you can |
| Second caller during a rush | Answered - up to four at once | Busy tone |
| At 9 pm on a Sunday | Answered | Answered, by you, on a Sunday |
| While you are with a customer | Answered | Ignored or answered badly |
| Record of the call | Transcript and summary of every one | Whatever you remember |
| Booking written down | Into the calendar during the call | A note, if you had a hand free |
| When you are on leave | Unchanged | It follows you |
What forwarding actually costs
Nothing on the invoice, which is why it survives. The cost shows up in three places instead: the calls that arrive while you are mid-consultation and are answered in a way that loses them, the second caller during a rush who gets a busy tone and rings somebody else, and the fact that your personal number is now the business line permanently. None of those appear anywhere you can measure, which is exactly why forwarding persists long after it has stopped working.
The second-caller problem
This is the part most owners underestimate. One mobile is a queue of one. During the hours your business is busiest - which are the hours the phone is worth most - the second and third callers get engaged tones. They do not wait and they rarely ring back.
- Four calls at once on one number, each a separate conversation
- No busy tone during the rush
- The caller at 11 am on Monday is handled exactly like the one at 11 pm on Sunday
When forwarding is still the right answer
For a lot of businesses it genuinely is, and we would rather say so.
- Low volume - a handful of calls a day that you comfortably answer
- Every caller wants you specifically, by name, and would not accept anyone else
- The conversations need judgement rather than information and booking
- You do not mind the line following you into evenings and holidays
You do not have to choose completely
Forwarding is per-condition, which is the part most people do not realise. Keep answering exactly as you do now and set the line to forward only on busy or no-answer - then the agent picks up precisely the calls you were already losing, and nothing else changes. After a fortnight the dashboard tells you how many that was, which is usually the moment the decision makes itself.
How the forwarding modes work · What it costs
The short answer
If you answer nearly every call and miss almost nothing, keep forwarding - it is free and it works. If your phone goes to a busy tone during your busiest hour, that is the thing you are actually paying for.
Frequently asked questions
Can I keep forwarding to my mobile as well?
Yes. Set it to forward on busy or no-answer and the agent only takes what you could not. You can also have it transfer callers to you when they ask for a person.
Will I lose control of my business number?
No. You keep the number and the forwarding setting, and you can switch it off yourself at any time.
What if I want to answer some calls myself?
That is the normal setup. Most businesses start on no-answer forwarding so nothing about their habits changes.
How do I know it is worth Rs 7,000?
Run it a month on no-answer forwarding and look at how many calls it picked up that you were not getting. If that number is small, do not keep it.
