What happens if the AI does not understand the caller?
It asks once, changes tack, and then fetches a person. It never tells a caller it cannot understand them.
Nobody publishes this, which is odd, because it is the thing that actually decides whether an AI receptionist is usable in India. Lines are noisy, callers are on speakerphone in traffic, and names do not survive speech recognition. Here is exactly what happens, in order.
At a glance
| Attempt | What it does | What it never does |
|---|
| First unclear turn | Asks them to repeat, in the language the call is in | Never says 'I don't understand you' |
| Second unclear turn | Changes to the regional speech engine once, if the words look like a language it is not listening for | Never asks twice in a row |
| Still unclear | Says one short line and transfers to your desk | Never loops, never apologises repeatedly |
| A name it cannot spell | Repeats the whole name once to confirm | Never spells it out letter by letter |
The clarifier is in the caller's language
If the call is in Hindi, the request to repeat is in Hindi. An English 'sorry, could you say that again' dropped into a Hindi call is the moment a caller decides they are talking to a machine, and it is a defect we treat as one.
An accent is never a reason
The agent is explicitly barred from switching engines or transferring because somebody has an accent, speaks slowly, mumbles once, or uses a word it does not know. It only acts after two consecutive turns that are not a sensible request in any language it has.
Why it transfers instead of guessing
A wrong booking is more expensive than a transfer. If it cannot establish what somebody wants, it does not book something approximate and hope - it takes the call to a person, and the whole transcript is on your dashboard so they are not starting from nothing.
What you can do about it
Every call is transcribed, so you can read the ones that went wrong. Most repeated confusion turns out to be a missing answer rather than a speech problem - somebody asking about a service that is not in your knowledge base. Adding it takes a minute and the AI stops fumbling that question.
Frequently asked questions
Does it handle Indian accents?
Yes, and it is not allowed to treat an accent as a failure. What it struggles with is the same thing a person struggles with - a bad line and background noise.
What if two people are talking at once?
It listens to the caller and stops speaking the moment they start. It does not talk over people.
Does it get names right?
Often not on the first pass, which is why it confirms the full name once rather than proceeding on a guess. Names in Indian scripts are repeated naturally, never spelled out.
Can I see the calls that went badly?
Yes. Every call has a written transcript, a summary and a quality score in the dashboard.
Does a confused call still get counted in my minutes?
Yes, it is connected call time like any other.
